Saint Isaiah and Gaudete Sunday

 Exult  -  Rejoice
  Bloom  -  Abundant
Joyful Song  -  Glory
Splendor  -  Singing
Everlasting Joy

These are some words you will hear in tomorrow's first reading - a reading from the Prophet Isaiah.  How perfect for the Advent Sunday of Joy, known as Gaudete Sunday in earlier days.

In the medieval days, Advent was a time of contemplation, and fasting - similar to Lent.  Gaudete Sunday Sunday was a joyful signal that Christmas was drawing closer and that the time of penitence was close to an end.  Rose-colored vestments and a rose-colored candle became cheery symbols of Christmas Day being just around the corner.
