Saints Jonah and Matthew ~ Some Old Testament and New Testament Connections

St. Jonah

St. Matthew

But the LORD sent a large fish, that swallowed Jonah; and he remained in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.

Just as Jonah was in the belly of the whale three days and three nights, so will the Son of Man be in the heart of the earth three days and three nights.   (12:40)

An evil and unfaithful generation seeks a sign, but no sign will be given it except the sign of Jonah.   (16:4)

when the people of Nineveh believed God; they proclaimed a fast and all of them, great and small, put on sackcloth.

At the judgment, the men of Nineveh will arise with this generation and condemn it, because they repented at the preaching of Jonah; and there is something greater than Jonah here.  (12:41)

Out of my distress I called to the LORD,
And he answered me.
-Jonah the Prophet
(Jonah 2:3)

He (Jesus) said to him (Matthew),
“Follow me.”
And he (Matthew) got up and followed Him.
-Matthew 9:9
