Biblical Illuminations - And A Fun CCD Lesson

An Illuminated Letter "P"
followed by "etrus,"
creating the name
"Peter" in Latin.

This Illuminated manuscript
comes from a 1407 AD hand-copied
and illuminated Bible.

I love the old medieval and prayerful art of Illuminated Manuscripts.  Creating illuminated Bible verses can be a fun CCD lesson … Have your students copy a Bible verse (maybe the Responsorial Psalm from Sunday’s mass?) and make the first letter of the verse extra-large.  Then have them make colorful doodles and designs around the first letter.  If there is extra time, have the students decorate (or for the more artistic kids, draw relevant images) along the borders.  Encourage them to ponder the words of the Bible verse as they illuminate.
