An Old Testament Joseph and a New Testament Joseph ... and Their Dreams

Joseph's Dream of Wheat
by Owen Jones (1809 - 1874)

An Angel Appearing To St. Joseph In A Dream
by Gaetano Gandolfi (circa 1790)

I don’t typically remember my dreams.  They seem to slip away as I wake up.  Sometimes I do recall them, but they are often so weird and confusing.  But, once in a great while, I have rather clear dreams that stick with me and sometimes seem to have a strong connection to my life.  I love those sorts of dreams, for they feel like messages from heaven.

A Comparison of the Dreams of the two Josephs:

Dreams Of The Old Testament Joseph

“There we were, binding sheaves in the field, when suddenly my sheaf rose to an upright position, and your sheaves formed a ring around my sheaf and bowed down to it.”
~ Genesis 37:7

“I had another dream,” he said; “this time, the sun and the moon and eleven stars were bowing down to me.”
~ Genesis 37:9

Dreams Of The New Testament Joseph
… behold, the angel of the Lord appeared to him (Joseph) in a dream and said, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary your wife into your home.  For it is through the holy Spirit that this child has been conceived in her.  She will bear a son and you are to name him Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.”
~ Matthew 1:20-21

… behold, the angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, “Rise, take the child and his mother, flee to Egypt, and stay there until I tell you.  Herod is going to search for the child to destroy him.”
~ Matthew 2:13

… behold, the angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt and said, “Rise, take the child and his mother and go to the land of Israel, for those who sought the child’s life are dead.
~ Matthew 2:19-20

And because he had been warned in a dream, he departed for the region of Galilee.
~ Matthew 2:22b
