The 2 Bible Passages on St. Onesiphorus & A Possible Prayer for the Dead

St. Onesiphorus is a biblical saint who lived in Ephesus and assisted Paul. His name appears only two times in the Bible:

~1~
May the Lord grant mercy to the family of Onesiphorus because he often gave me new heart and was not ashamed of my chains.  But when he came to Rome, he promptly search for me and found me. May the Lord grant him to find mercy from the Lord on that day.  And you know very well the services he rendered in Ephesus.
- 2 Timothy 1:16-18

~2~
Greet Prisca and Aquila and the family of Onesiphorus.
- 2 Timothy 4:19

Had St. Onesiphorus already Died when St. Paul Wrote this Letter?
The following words, taken from 2 Timothy 1:18 sound very prayer-like.  Because Paul refers to Onesiphorus in the past tense and asks for prayers for Onesiphorus's family and not Onesiphorus himself has led many to believe that St. Onesiphorus was already dead when this letter was written. If so, the words below could be considered one of the first Christian Prayers for the Dead:

May the Lord grant him to find mercy from the Lord on that day.
- 2 Timothy 1:18
